MLK Day Reflection

Monday, January 20, 2014 |

Today marks the 31st annual celebration of Martin Luther King, jr. Day. On this day, we are all encouraged to take part in both service and reflection. Dr. King was a key figure in the Civil Rights Movement. Through lectures and conversations Dr. King was able to speak out on issues of race and inequality (among many others.)

He is respected for his passion and advocacy. When faced with a challenge he fought it in a clear and articulate way. Today many people remember his legacy. Many celebrities even chimed in today to celebrate MLK's memory:

YouTube sensation, Kid President, has a great reflection on the importance of celebrating MLK.

After a lot of thinking today I realized how important it is to have dreams and follow through with them. Here's my easy guide to following your dreams in the style of Dr. King:

ONE// FIND A CAUSE
Is there something that makes you upset or that you think should be better? Write it down.

TWO//  DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM
Think about why this problem exists. What is the cause? Is it a problem with one person? A whole group? or even, a whole society? Figure out what scale you are dealing with.

THREE// BRAINSTORM SOLUTIONS
Brainstorm easy ways for you to improve the situation. Talk to your friends - they might be interested in joining your mission.

FOUR// TAKE ACTION
Take clear steps to improve the situation. Action, no matter how small can make a real difference. Think about improving this issue in steps (For instance - First, among your friends; Next, among your class; Then, within your school).

Whether you dream of starting a company or helping abandoned animals find welcoming new homes, it is important to find causes that make you feel passionate. Once you have found that dream, it is important to follow through.

What do you DREAM about?
