Oprah: Helping Girls Lead

Everyone knows who Oprah is. Growing up I remember watching her talk show The Oprah Winfrey Show in the afternoons. Oprah's show was the highest-rated program of its kind and was on TV for 25 years!

However, for Oprah TV was just the beginning. She is a media mogul and seems to have her hands on everything. She has acted in several films, she has authored 5 books, she publishes a popular monthly magazine, she hosts a radio program on XM satellite radio, and she curates her website Oprah.com

With all of these responsibilities it is amazing that she has time for anything else, but for Oprah giving back is just as important as her work.

Education is one of the causes that is most important to Oprah. By 2012 it was estimated that she had given away over $400 million to educational causes. One of the most iconic demonstrations of this philanthropy was her founding the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.

The school's mission aims to "provide a nurturing educational environment for academically gifted girls who come from disadvantaged backgrounds."

Oprah hopes that this education will teach girls to "sit at the table where the future of the world is decided."

Oprah certainly has learned to make an impact -- both professionally, and philanthropically. She has even gotten involved with politics (she is known for her strong campaigning for President Obama).

Oprah has been quoted saying "Life isn't about what you have, but what you have to give." It is clear that she lives by this mantra and continues to give and give. That's part of the reason we all love her so much!
